Art criticism through the eyes of the viewer
ArtClips is a series of short films on interactions of viewers with works of art. Each installment consists primarily of conversations (audio) accompanied by detailed ‘visual analysis’ of the work on which the viewers are talking.

The series is aimed to offer an alternative to the two main features of traditional films on art: the emphasis on the historical past, and the voice of the expert as authority. A subsequent feature of the usual art film, the under-representation of the visual properties and effects of the artwork, is replaced with a close visual engagement with the work.

A few individuals are invited to come and look at a work of art - painting or sculpture, video installation, or whatever other art form. They are selected not on the basis of expertise but their interest in and enthusiasm for art. They are brought in contact with a work they have never seen before and asked to respond. Because of the situation of conversation - two people speak together - they tend to become much more articulate than they see themselves as being. As the installments on the pilot show, every one has something interesting to say about the work and about their own encounter with it.
